So, What Exactly is Glulam Timber?

The termGlulam is a shortened term that refers to glue-laminated timber. This construction material is composed of several layers of solid timber that is bonded together with high-strength, moisture-resistant adhesives.

While it is made from natural timber, Glulam is still an engineered wood product. This means that it is machined, pressed and assembled to precise specifications to create a predictable, dimensionally stable building material, much like other common engineered wood products such as plywood and laminated veneer lumber (LVL).

Glulam timber is typically manufactured and sold in several standard widths and lengths, but can also be custom-fabricated to meet an extensive range of design specifications. As a result, Glulam is often a popular choice for expansive projects, from large vaulted roofs and intricate domes to bridges and more.

Glulam Grades

Glulam timber typically comes in four appearance grades, each of which has its own unique uses and applications. These include:

  • Framing: This appearance grade is the most common choice for residential construction and is recommended only for use in concealed areas.
  • Industrial: Industrial-grade appearance for Glulam is used in areas where the aesthetics are not a major concern. While this Glulam is finished slightly better than the framing grade, it is a product that is used for its appearance, but rather for its strength.
  • Architectural: Where Glulam is to be used as a facade or in exposed elements, architectural Glulam is recommended. This grade offers a high-quality finish, where any imperfections are filled or treated to provide a more attractive appearance.
  • Premium: This is the highest grade of Glulam and is only available through special order. Premium-grade Glulam offers the highest-quality finish and is recommended for aesthetic use.

Understanding the different appearance grades will help guide subsequent decisions, ensuring that the selected Glulam aligns seamlessly with its intended function.

Common Applications For Glue-Laminated Timber

As one of the oldest and still widely used timber products, Glulam timber boasts an expansive range of applications that span across a multitude of building types. Beyond traditional buildings, Glulam is typically used for load-bearing structures such as bridges and pavilions. Other common applications include:

  • Straight Beams: From lintels and purlins to ridge beams and floor beams, Glulam serves as a sturdy foundation for diverse structural elements.
  • Columns: Whether in round, square, or other intricate configurations, Glulam columns provide both aesthetic appeal and structural support.
  • Rafters & Bridges: Glulam’s exceptional load-bearing capacity lends itself to creating secure and reliable rafters and bridge supports.
  • Timber Trusses: Glulam timber trusses are incredibly durable, offering a dependable framework for spanning wide distances.
  • Arches: Utilised for both their aesthetics and structural integrity, Glulam arches are often used to elevate the visual appeal of various architectural designs.
  • Curved Beams: Glulam’s flexibility and durability make it a popular choice when crafting eye-catching curved beams.

Why Glulam Is A Construction Material Of Choice

Glulam continues to be a popular choice for construction projects around the world, offering a range of distinct benefits. These include:

1. Strength and Load-Bearing Capacity

Due to its exceptional load-bearing capacity and low-weight Glulam timber is one of the best materials for projects that need to span large areas. With the ability to extend across sections of up to 100 meters without the need for intermediate support, Glulam timber not only ensures structural stability but also empowers designers and builders to push the boundaries of creativity.

2. Design Flexibility and Aesthetic Appeal

Beyond it’s strength, Glulam is a naturally attractive product, that is popular amongst builders and architects alike. Its design flexibility and inherent aesthetic appeal offer a range of opportunities to create stylish spaces, without compromising on strength or durability.

3. Environmental Benefits and Sustainability

At the heart of Glulam’s sustainability lies its primary resource: timber. By using timber from sustainably managed forests, this raw material is inherently renewable, ensuring a cycle that preserves the surrounding environment.

Much like other timber materials, Glulam also contributes to sustainable construction through its carbon sequestration and storage. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, effectively storing carbon within their fibres. By transforming timber into Glulam, this carbon is retained and locked away, effectively offsetting emissions and contributing to a healthier, more balanced environment.

The processes and energy involved in manufacturing Glulam are remarkably low when compared to other construction materials. This reduction in energy demand translates to a smaller carbon footprint, contributing to mitigating the impact of construction on our planet’s climate. Additionally, its durability and structural integrity make it easy to reuse and recycle, reducing waste and minimising the burden on landfills.

4. Resistance to Warping and Shrinking

Glulam timber’s ability to withstand warping and shrinking is a result of meticulous engineering and careful material selection. By combining multiple layers of wood and bonding them with advanced adhesives, Glulam achieves a balanced product that mitigates the effects of moisture, temperature changes, and other environmental factors.

Unlike traditional solid timber, where the natural variations of each piece can lead to unpredictable behaviours, Glulam’s engineered construction ensures consistent, predictable performance. This translates into structures that maintain their intended dimensions over time, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and repairs.

5. Fire Resistance and Safety Considerations

Glue-laminated timber is considered to be safer than unprotected steel in fire. As steel weakens and buckles under the intense heat of a blaze, Glulam creates a carbonised layer that decreases oxygen consumption and retards combustion.

6. Lightweight

In comparison to conventional building materials, Glulam boasts a remarkable weight advantage. It’s lightweight nature can simplify assembly, reducing labour-intensive efforts and accelerating construction timelines. Glulam is also easy to work with, so holes and notches can easily be cut into the material without the need for an experienced engineer.

Glulam Maintenance

Glulam’s aesthetic appeal doesn’t wane with time; rather, it weathers, adding character and depth as a natural patina develops over time. However, to ensure that exposed Glulam maintains its captivating charm and structural integrity, maintenance is essential.

  • Inspection: Regularly assess the exposed surfaces, checking for signs of wear, cracking, or any changes in the timber’s appearance. Pay special attention to joints, connections, and areas exposed to weather or moisture. Timely identification of minor issues can prevent potential deterioration and pave the way for prompt intervention.
  • Cleaning: Cleaning will help remove algae and bacteria, which is the precursor to more significant rotting and fungal decay. Gently remove dirt, dust, and environmental residue using a soft brush or cloth. For stubborn stains, mild soap solutions or specialized wood cleaners can be used.
  • Repairs: Should the need arise, addressing repairs promptly is crucial to ensuring its structural integrity and durability. Depending on the severity, repairs may include patching, resealing, or reinforcing affected areas. It is always recommended to engage with skilled professionals to ensure that any repairs align with the original craftsmanship but also safeguard the structure’s longevity.
